MacFarquhar, Larissa. "Forum Response: The Logic of Effective Altruism". The Boston Review, 6 July 2017.
- Since most wealth is concentrated in rich countries and most extreme poverty in poor countries, it is usually better for people to give to strangers far away from them. This creates a divide between the emotional urge to help neighbors and the logical drive to help in the most cost-effective manner. Effective altruists demand that the logical choice been chosen.
- This does seem to take some the essential morality of charity away, however, as the emotional connection with those saved is forfeited. It makes giving more abstract, with possible implications of how we perceive charity.
- Distance certainly has an effect on the way in which we as humans think about morality. Consider how the practice of drone strikes generates so much controversy compared to more conventional means of killing others.
