Brest, Paul. "Forum Response: The Logic of Effective Altruism". The Boston Review, 6 July 2017.
- Peter Singer and other effective altruists argue that while social goods like the arts and humanities have some value, this value is nothing compared to that of a human life. This means that while spending on the arts and humanities is admirable in a world which has eradicated extreme poverty, it is misspend resources in the contemporary world.
- It could be argued that effective altruism sort of requires these social and cultural institutions to exist, but does not contribute to their upkeep.
- Most efforts by effective altruists and others to increase the effectiveness of aid donations and charities have been fruitless.
