Roggio, Bill and Caleb Weiss. "Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan faction emerges after group’s collapse". The Long War Journal, 14 June 2016.
- A new faction of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan [IMU] which appears to have remained loyal to Al-Qaeda against the orders of the previous leader Usman Ghazi announced its existence on June 10, 2016 via Twitter and Telegram messages in Arabic and English.
- The pro-Taliban faction of the IMU claimed that they represent the majority of the group, but that the pro-ISIS clique led by Usman Ghazi controlled the group's media outlets and misrepresented the movement.
- The previous head of the IMU, Usman Ghazi, had become enraged with the Taliban after believing -- correctly -- that they had covered up the death of their previously leader Mullah Omar. He then pledged allegiance to ISIS and joined a fight against the Taliban in Zabul province where he was killed or captured along with his pro-ISIS faction.
- The pro-Taliban faction of the IMU has not yet declared a new Emir after the death of Usman Ghazi and may not do so publicly, considering that their previous two leaders -- Tahir Yuldashev and Abu Usman Adil -- were both killed in drone strikes after being named leaders by the group.
