  • Although it initially pledged support for the Muslim Brotherhood and Egyptian democracy, the Obama administration also did not protest much when the military overthrew the Morsi government in 2013 and reestablished a military dictatorship.
  • Destroying the Muslim Brotherhood, as many Arab governments, and increasingly the Trump government, want to do means destroying Middle Eastern democracy. This is because under any democratic system, Arabs will vote for political Islam; if Islamism is repressed, then so is democracy.
    • The source of all of the Middle East's problems can be traced to a lack of democracy and corrupt autocratic governments.
    • The push for the US Congress to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization is dangerous because it would crush democracy in the Arab world.
  • Governments that target the Muslim Brotherhood, like the el Sisi government in Egypt, do not only target it, but also aggressively act against any and all political opponents. The type of society that would repress the Brotherhood is the type that would repress opposition more broadly.
  • The participation of Islamist parties in Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain has helped those countries democratize and moderated the positions of those Islamist groups. The same could have occurred in Egypt, but the military intervened before it could.
